GSAS WRITING ADVISORs

Whether it is for term papers, grant applications, project proposals, or your thesis, one of the most challenging aspects of graduate school is the simple process of putting words on paper. Academic writing is a balancing act, requiring detailed and nuanced analyses while maintaining the focus on a driving central narrative, not to mention the challenges of engaging the reader in a compelling argument without losing the veneer of academic polish. Sometimes, a fresh pair of eyes is needed.

The Graduate School of Arts and Science is pleased to announce the availability of a writing advisor to provide feedback on your work, discuss writing ideas, and help you overcome your writer’s block. The advisor can help you brainstorm ideas, work on a manuscript’s structure and organization, and focus on academic style and language. 

Please note that this is not a copy-editing service.

The advisor can focus on:
1.      Grant applications
2.      PhD petitions or proposals
3.      Thesis chapters
4.      Research papers or journal articles
5.      Conference abstracts or presentations

For a 20-minute one-on-one consultation with an advisor, please email gsas.writing@nyu.edu to schedule an appointment. Be sure to include your name, department, degree program (Master’s or PhD), and the reason for the appointment. Note that it may take 3-5 business days until your appointment. 

Spring 2023 Master's College Research Grants

What is the Master’s College Research Grant?

With the goal of helping master’s students access resources to help develop more thorough research, the Master’s College is sponsoring research grants for master’s students. The grants will be awarded on a rolling basis until all funding has been distributed. Grants support master’s students who need to travel to archives or research sites, interview individuals outside of New York City, purchase copies of archival materials or transcripts of interviews, and other instances where some additional funding will help support an engaging and original research project. Master’s College Research Grants cannot be distributed to doctoral candidates, advanced certificate students, or students in affiliate programs.

Who can apply

Open to all current GSAS master’s students who are working on research related to their thesis/final projects. Students from affiliate programs (Basic Medical Science, Biomedical Informatics, Cinema Studies, Data Science, Ergonomics and Biomechanics, Institute of Fine Arts, and Performance Studies) are not eligible for this grant. 

Grant amounts and availability

Up to $500. A total of 24 grants are available for the Spring 2023 semester. 

What the funds can be used for

Helping to support research-related costs associated with the completion of a master’s thesis or capstone project. Examples of accepted grant applications include funds to cover the cost of traveling to an archive, purchasing of archival materials, dedicated writing trips sponsored through an institution or organization, to help cover costs associated with field work/interviews, or subsidizing costs related to trainings or equipment.

How to apply

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, however, the funds must be used by September 1st, 2023. Applications can be found here. Students will need to submit their contact and student information along with an explanation (no more than 250 words) of how the grant will contribute to the completion of their master’s thesis/capstone project, as well as a budget explanation of how the funds will be used and the total cost associated with your project/trip. Please be aware that when all awards have been distributed the application will be closed for the award cycle.
