Rather than a Statement of Academic Purpose, the Department of Chemistry asks you to describe your motivation for graduate school in chemistry. You may elaborate on chemical problems of the greatest interest to you and include discoveries in the field of chemistry that have inspired you.
Chemistry Personal History Statement is required and gives information on your background. The purpose of this essay is to get to know you as an individual and as a potential graduate student. The Chemistry department encourages applicants whose previous and future academic research experience will significantly contribute to our goals of equity, inclusion, and academic excellence at the Graduate School. Please note that the Personal History Statement is not meant to be a general autobiography. The statement is required and should not exceed two double-spaced pages. It should not duplicate the Statement of Academic Purpose.
Writing sample not required.
The Chemistry Department encourages you to submit a short video statement. This is an optional part of your application and is not required.
- Your video should be no more than three (3) minutes in length.
- In your video, consider answering two (2) or more of the the following questions:
- What is your primary motivation for pursuing a graduate degree in Chemistry?
- What is an experiment or discovery in Chemistry that has inspired you? Feel free to use a whiteboard if useful for explaining.
- Why did you apply to NYU-Chemistry?
- Why do you think you would be a good match for our graduate program?
- Is there additional information you would like to tell us about yourself that is relevant to your application?
- Your video need not be anything more than you answering the questions. Your answers, not production values, are what will be evaluated.
The Ph.D. program in Chemistry offers the opportunity to conduct research in New York, or at NYU Abu Dhabi or NYU Shanghai. Applicants who are interested in opportunities at Abu Dhabi or Shanghai should indicate their interest in the campus section of the application.
