1. What is the transcript policy for new students?
Prior to your first term of registration you must provide official transcript(s) showing conferral of all degree(s) and all graduate-level work (if applicable). Do NOT mail us transcripts until they show this information.
Each document must be an original, official document with the registrar’s stamp or signature. Scanned, photocopied or uploaded documents submitted as part of your application for admission do not fulfill this requirement. Certified English translations must accompany all documents written in languages other than English. Translations must be literal and complete versions of the original records. Official documents are required, as follows:
- One final transcript from each institution at which a degree was conferred (undergraduate or graduate). Recent graduates should confirm that the document shows the degree and graduation date.
- One transcript from each institution in which you enrolled in graduate-level courses (if applicable), even if a degree was not conferred.
Please note for transcripts that do not show the degree and graduation date, a graduation certificate or diploma showing conferral of your bachelor’s degree will also be required. For institutions in Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka, an official copy of the provisional degree certificate will be acceptable.
2. How do I submit my transcripts?
Please arrange to have your transcripts sent to Graduate Enrollment Services as soon as possible. Use http://gsas.nyu.edu/object/grad.admissions.GES_address to find the correct address for your delivery method. It will become part of your official New York University record.
3. My institution provides electronic transcripts. How should I submit them?
Please request your school(s) or its authorized agent to email your final and official electronic transcript to gsas.admissions@nyu.edu.
4. My transcript is from a school outside the U.S. and I cannot obtain more than one original transcript from the school. What should I do?
Please email us at gsas.admissions@nyu.edu for assistance.
5. I am a current NYU student or I was previously enrolled at NYU. Am I required to submit an NYU transcript?
If you are a current or previously-enrolled NYU student, you do not need to request your NYU official transcript.
6. I will not receive my final and official transcript until later in the summer. Should I submit what I have now?
No, please wait and send the final and official transcript and diploma.
7. What will happen if I do not send my transcripts?
If we do not receive a final and official transcript showing conferral of your bachelor’s degree, a hold will be placed on your registration.
8. How do I know if my transcripts have been received?
Your Application Status page will update when your official transcripts have been received. Please allow at least 10 days for information to update on your Application Status page; allow additional time if your transcript was mailed from outside the U.S.
For the transcript showing conferral of your undergraduate degree (or equivalent), please refer to the Admitted Applicant Checklist section. There is a bullet point listing the status for Final and Official Transcript. If it says "We have received a final and official transcript showing conferral of your undergraduate degree," then we have received and reviewed the document. No further action is required by you. If it says "We have not received a final and official transcript showing conferral of your undergraduate degree," then we either have not yet received the document, or we have received it but not yet done our review.
PLEASE NOTE: We review transcripts continually. Check your Application Status page periodically, but do not contact us again until August 1 if the status does not change. If we require additional information, we will contact you.
9. My final and official transcripts were mailed or sent electronically by my school, but my Application Status page does not show receipt. What should I do?
If your Application Status page indicates that your transcript was not received and you are sure that you arranged for the institution to send it to us, verify the following before arranging to have it sent again.
- Compare the name on the transcript with the name on your application. If they are different, please inform us by writing gsas.admissions@nyu.edu. Please be sure to include both names and your UID number in your message.
- Make sure that the transcript was mailed to the correct mailing address (please see GSAS Admissions Mailing Addresses). If it was sent elsewhere, including to your department, then it was not received by Graduate Enrollment Services. You will need to send it again.
- If you provided your institution with the proper mailing address, it is still possible that they sent it to the wrong address at NYU. Many registrars use automated mailing systems with a standard address for NYU (e.g., the undergraduate office) that is not the correct one for Graduate Enrollment Services. In such cases, we recommend you obtain another copy of the official transcript in a sealed envelope and mail it to us personally.
