Journalism
Applications and all supporting materials must be submitted online by 5PM Eastern Time. If a listed deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or U.S. federal holiday, then the next business day will be the actual deadline.
American Journalism Program
- July 15: Fall admission
- December 15: Spring admission
Near Eastern Studies/Journalism Program
- January 15: Fall admission
All Other Programs
- January 4: Fall admission
- Late applications will be considered if space remains.
Requirements
In addition to the general application requirements, the department specifically requires:
GRE OPTIONAL
- Joint M.A. in International Relations/Journalism, Joint M.A. in Russian and Slavic/Journalism
GRE Not Required
- All other programs
TOEFL/IELTS
Applicants must submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores unless they:
Are a native English speaker; OR
Are a US citizen or permanent resident; OR
Have completed (or will complete) a baccalaureate or master's degree at an institution where the language of instruction is English.

All Joint M.A. Programs
One or two Journalism writing samples are required. In addition, a writing sample may be required by the non-Journalism program — please refer to the individual program's requirements for the writing sample requirements of the other program.
All Other Programs
Three different writing samples are required. The writing samples need not have been published, although if you have clips you are proud of, please do submit them. The samples should represent your best overall work and your aptitude for journalism. Clips from your college newspaper, personal essays, academic research papers, and short fiction are all acceptable.
News and Documentary & Reporting the Nation and New York
The writing sample requirement listed directly above may also be met by including multimedia work produced by applicants, such as links to work posted on Vimeo or YouTube.
