Foreign Language Proficiency Exam
Exam Information
Please Note: This exam is for GSAS students only. If you are not a GSAS student, the exam you are likely looking for is offered by NYU's School of Professional Studies and may be found here.
Several departments and programs in the Graduate School of Arts and Science require graduate students to demonstrate proficiency in at least one foreign language that is viewed as integral to their academic research. This requirement can be fulfilled by translating the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (FLPE).
Each November, March and August, the Office of Academic and Student Affairs will administer the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (FLPE) to matriculated students in the Graduate School of Arts and Science. We give the most popular/common languages. However, many uncommon language requests are honored. Even though, we administer the FLPE, language proficiency may be demonstrated by other means. For further details of how a student can fulfill this requirement, please visit the GSAS Bulletin requirements page.
For students who will translate the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (FLPE) given by the Graduate School of Arts and Science:
The Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (FLPE) consists of one to three paragraphs written in the foreign language of choice. Students are required to translate the exam into English with the assistance of a non-electronic, print dictionary. Two hours are given to complete the exam and all language exams are graded on a Pass/Fail grading system. In order to receive a successful grade of Pass, the exam must be translated according to the recognized standards of written academic English.
Special accommodations are provided for students registered with the Henry and Lucy Moses Center for Students with Disabilities.
*Please note: Interested students must be matriculated and enrolled in New York University’s Graduate School of Arts and Science to be eligible for the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam. We will confirm your registration acceptance by email on Friday, July 28, or sooner.
All students must comply with university building access rules.
