Foreign Language Proficiency Requirement
Several departments and programs in the Graduate School of Arts and Science require graduate students to demonstrate proficiency in at least one foreign language that is viewed as integral to their academic research. This requirement can be fulfilled by translating the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (FLPE).
*For students who will translate the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (FLPE) given by the Graduate School of Arts and Science:
The Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (FLPE) consists of one to three paragraphs written in the foreign language of choice. Students are required to translate the exam with the assistance of a print dictionary. Two hours are given to complete the exam and all language exams are graded on a Pass/Fail grading system. In order to receive a successful grade of Pass, the exam must be translated according to the recognized standards of written academic English.
Special accommodations are provided for students registered with the Henry and Lucy Moses Center for Students with Disabilities.
*Please note: Interested students must be matriculated and enrolled in New York University’s Graduate School of Arts and Science to be eligible for the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam.
