Foreign Language Proficiency Requirement

Register Now for the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam

Each March, August and November, the Office of Academic and Student Life administers the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (FLPE).  Some departments and programs in the Graduate School of Arts and Science require graduate students to demonstrate proficiency in at least one foreign language that is viewed as integral to their academic research.  All language requests are honored. However, language proficiency may be demonstrated by other means. For further details of how a student can fulfill this requirement, please visit the GSAS Bulletin requirements page.

*For students who will translate the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (FLPE) given by the Graduate School of Arts and Science:

The Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (FLPE) consists of one to three paragraphs written in the foreign language of choice. Students are required to translate the exam with the assistance of a print dictionary. Two hours are given to complete the exam and all language exams are graded on a Pass/Fail grading system. Special accommodations are provided for students registered with the Henry and Lucy Moses Center for Students with Disabilities.

*Please note: Interested students must be matriculated and enrolled in New York University’s Graduate School of Arts and Science to be eligible for the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam.
