MacCracken Housing Program for Doctoral Students

Dear Member of Our Graduate School Community,

We are very happy to welcome you to New York University and to the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS). We are pleased to write you about the special housing options available through the MacCracken Housing Program (MHP), a unique housing program offered by GSAS to our doctoral MacCracken students for their first year of study.

The Graduate School subsidizes the cost of the housing to insure that we can offer you affordable and appropriate graduate housing near the Washington Square campus for your first year of study. MHP provides two housing options:

  1. Converted two-bedroom apartments located in Stuyvesant Town
  2. Traditional two-bedroom apartments located in Stuyvesant Town

StuyvesantTown is a secure enclave of 89 high-rise buildings set in a park-like environment amid lawns, numerous trees, and playgrounds. It is located on the east side of Manhattan, between 14th and 20th Streets, and First Avenue and East River Drive. It is a 10-15 minute walk to campus, is connected to the Washington Square campus by the free NYU shuttle bus service, and is close to public transportation. All apartments are furnished and are in elevator buildings.

The Graduate School may add a third housing option to MHP over the next few months. If so, we will inform you about the additional housing opportunity.

When comparing off-campus housing alternatives to MHP housing, please keep in mind that the MHP rates are more affordable than most comparable non-NYU apartments listed at market rates. MHP has many attractive features:

  • The Graduate School heavily subsidizes the MHP housing rates
  • Utilities are included in the room cost (heat, water and electricity)
  • Apartments are furnished
  • MHP housing is close to campus
  • Laundry facilities are on site
  • All buildings have elevators
  • Security is maintained by Stuyvesant Town Security

We ask that all students complete an online Statement of Intent, so that we know the interest in MHP housing throughout the class. To take advantage of MHP housing, you first indicate your interest by submitting the Statement of Intent, available at www.nyu.edu/gsas/housing-intent. After we receive your submission, we will send you an email with specific information about the housing application process. Your immediate submission of the Statement of Intent is very important so that we can know that you are interested in our housing.

If you choose to decline the MHP housing offer, we also ask that you notify us of your decision by completing the Statement of Intent, using the same link noted above. If you intend to live off campus, you might want to consider the Graduate School’s Lease Guaranty Program (LGP). Information on LGP is included in your housing information envelope.

We provide descriptive information about MHP on the following pages, including:

  • Program Summary
  • Six Steps for Participating in MHP
  • MHP Housing Options at a Glance
  • Stuyvesant Town Converted and Traditional Two-Bedroom Apartments, Detailed Description
  • Housing Policies
  • Housing Floor Plans

If you have any questions about the MacCracken Housing Program or the Lease Guaranty Program, please do not hesitate to contact me, Israel Rodriguez, Assistant Director of Student Affairs at the Office of Academic and Student Life at (212) 998-8097 or email at israel.rodriguez@nyu.edu.

Everyone in the Graduate School wants you to have the best possible academic experience. We all look forward to hearing from you and to meeting you in September.

Sincerely,

Israel Rodriguez

Graduate School of Arts and Science MacCracken Housing Program

(For MacCracken Doctoral Students During Their First Year of Study)

Program Summary, 2007-2008

The Graduate School of Arts and Science is pleased to announce the MacCracken Housing Program (MHP). The Graduate School offers all new MacCracken doctoral students the opportunity for graduate housing at greatly subsidized rates for their first year of study. The housing program is designed to help our students acclimate to New York City during the first year of their doctoral careers. We expect that by the end of their first year, students will be familiar enough with the city and the university to find housing more easily than they would have been able to do at the beginning of their studies.

Two Important Notes

1. Applications must be received by May 4, 2007 and be accompanied by a $1,000 application fee. The application fee will convert to a security deposit once you begin living in MHP housing. After May 4th, we will not be able to accommodate MHP housing requests.

2. MHP is a special program, specifically designed for new MacCracken doctoral students in GSAS. The application process, procedures, and deadline dates are different from those required for other graduate housing options offered by NYU. Please use the forms and follow the procedures and requirements that GSAS describes in these materials. Do not follow any procedures provided by the NYU Housing Office.

What are the criteria for participating in MHP?

  • Participation is limited to first-year MacCracken doctoral students, beginning their studies in the fall 2007 semester.[1]
  • MHP housing is available only for a student’s first year of study.
  • Single students are eligible to participate in all of the housing options.
  • Married or partnered students may apply with their spouses or eligible domestic partners. The housing rate for the partner is not subsidized by the Graduate School, unless the spouse or partner is also a new entering MacCracken doctoral student.
  • Family housing is regrettably not available.

 MHP—Six Steps for Participating

There are six steps to take in the MHP process.

  1. Indicate your interest in MHP by completing the Statement of Intent form located online at www.nyu.edu/gsas/housing-intent. Please remember, we ask that all students complete the Statement of Intent even if you do not intend to participate in MHP. (If you do not have access to the web, please contact Israel Rodriguez at israel.rodriguez@nyu.edu, or 212-998-8087.) Please note that the Statement of Intent begins the housing application process, but it is not the official application and does not secure your housing place. The official application is required by Friday, May 4 to secure housing (please refer to the fourth step).
  2. Upon receipt of your Statement of Intent, Israel Rodriguez in the GSAS Office of Academic and Student Life (OASL) will send you an email that asks you to immediately establish an NYU email account. Instructions on how to do this will be provided. Once you activate your NYU email account, OASL will provide you with access to a secure Blackboard web site where detailed information about the graduate housing application procedure and materials are posted (including the official housing application, license agreement, and relevant consent and disclosure forms).
  3. Review the housing materials on the Blackboard web site and make a final decision about whether or not you wish to apply for housing through the MHP. You will be asked to prioritize your MHP choices between the two housing options that we offer. Married and partnered applicants should review what is needed to complete the Statement of Domestic Partnership form.
  4. Mail the official housing application and $1,000 (U.S.) application fee so that it is received at the Graduate School by no later than Friday, May 4, 2007. The Graduate School is not able to process a housing application without the application fee.

Two Important Notes about the Application Fee

    • The $1,000 application fee for MHP is not refundable if you withdraw your application, choose not to accept the housing that is offered, or if you do not enroll as a full-time student in GSAS in fall 2007. However, if we are not able to offer you housing at any of the locations you specify on your Statement of Intent, then we will return the $1,000 fee to you. Furthermore, once you enroll in GSAS in fall 2007 and you move into your assigned MHP housing, the application fee will convert to a security deposit and will be returned to you at the end of the license period. Please see the sixth step for more details.
    • Full details about acceptable methods of payment are available on the Blackboard web site. The $1,000 must be paid by check or money order. For U.S. students, payment may be a personal check or money order drawn from a U.S. bank. For international students, the payment must be an international money order or certified check drawn in U.S. dollars.
  1. You will be notified before the end of June regarding your housing assignment.
  2. Your $1,000 application fee will convert to a security deposit and will be held in an off-campus, interest-bearing bank account once you enroll in GSAS and check into your housing. The security deposit, plus any interest, will be returned to you (minus any relevant outstanding charges) at the end of the term of the housing license. (Our process for handling your application fee may change in the next few months to make it easier for us to return the fee to you. We will keep you informed if changes to the process occur.)

Questions?

The Graduate School’s Office of Academic and Student Life works with applicants to coordinate the receipt and handling of the housing application, including application fee and license, and to finalize apartment and roommate assignments.

If you have any questions, please contact Israel Rodriguez, Assistant Director for Student Affairs, at israel.rodriguez@nyu.edu, or by telephone at (212) 998-8097.

MHP—StuyvesantTown

Converted Two-Bedroom and Traditional Two-Bedroom Apartments

Stuyvesant Town is a secure enclave of 89 high-rise buildings set in a park-like environment amid lawns, numerous trees, and playgrounds. It is located on the east side of Manhattan, between 14th and 20th Streets, and First Avenue and East River Drive. It is a 10-15 minute walk to the Washington Square Campus, is connected by the free NYU shuttle bus service, and is close to public transportation. Because of its proximity to NYU’s Washington Square campus, Stuyvesant Town is an ideal choice for newly admitted students.

The Graduate School is pleased to have two housing options in Stuyvesant Town:

Converted two-bedroom apartments. Previously one bedroom units, these apartments were converted into two-bedroom units, with each bedroom now being a separate room. The approximate size of these apartments is 580 square feet.

Traditional two-bedroom apartments. The traditional apartment has larger rooms throughout, including the two bedrooms. The approximate size of these apartments is 820 square feet.

Features

  • All apartments are furnished, air-conditioned and include two private bedrooms, a full bathroom with tub/shower, a kitchen and a dining area.
  • The kitchen includes a refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, and sink. Residents must provide their own cookware, dishes, and supplies. Students may sign up for University meal plans at other University residences or facilities, if desired, at the published University rates.
  • Each bedroom contains a twin bed, desk, dresser or armoire, and wastebasket.
  • A table and chairs are provided in the dining alcove. Additional furnishings are provided for the common area (loveseats or three-seater couch). Windows have shades.
  • Heat, water, and electricity are included in the rental fees.
  • All units are in elevator buildings and are equipped with coin-operated laundry rooms in the basement.
  • Stuyvesant Town Security polices the area and works closely with NYU’s Office of Public Safety on issues of concern to student residents. All residents enter apartments by key. Since Stuyvesant Town buildings do not have doormen service, all guests use the intercom to contact their host's apartment and to be buzzed in.
  • Mailboxes for each apartment are located in the entry vestibule of individual buildings.
  • NYU maintains a full-time professional manager, and Graduate Resident Assistants are in residence as part of the Stuyvesant Town community.

Telephone, Cable and Computer Services

Telephone, cable and computer services are not included in the charges at Stuyvesant Town.

Telephone: Students contract independently for telephone service. Residents provide their own telephones (no wall phones). To establish long-distance service, residents must contact a carrier directly. Roommates are solely responsible for telephone bills and should agree beforehand about telephone use and payment responsibility.

Cable: Students contract independently for cable TV service. Residents provide their own televisions and connecting cables.

Computer Access: Students contract independently for internet service. Modem connections to NYUNet and the internet can be made from all apartments by setting up an NYU dial-up account and connecting a computer with modem to the phone jack and dialing in (assuming residents establish local telephone service). Obtain an "NYU-Net Start-Up" CD at any ITS computer lab on campus, or view information online at www.nyu.edu/its/software/nyunetcd/menu.html.

MHP—Housing Policies

GSAS MHP participants must comply with all policies and procedures outlined in the NYU Residential Education Handbook. The handbook is on the web at www.nyu.edu/residential.education/judicial/judicial_handbook.html.

Policies include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Double occupancy is not permitted in rooms scheduled for single occupancy.
  • Subletting is not permitted.
  • Pets are not permitted.
  • Family housing is regrettably not available.
  • Students may sign up for University meal plans at other University residences or facilities, if desired, at published University rates. For more information about NYU Dining Services, visit www.campusdish.com/en-US/eCampus1/NYU.

Roommate Anyone?

The Graduate School of Arts and Science is committed to providing a supportive residential experience by providing a roommate selection feature within the MHP application process.

Single applicants may request roommates from the pool of other GSAS student participants in MHP. In most cases, persons of the same legal (biological) gender will be paired together as roommates, with the exception of approved married spouses, eligible domestic partners and students who prefer to reside with someone of their same gender identity or expression.

To select a roommate, students will be prompted to place an advertisement in the bulletin board section on the MHP Blackboard site to find a compatible roommate. Students are encouraged to be specific when describing themselves, individual preferences and their ideal match. Participants will be able to exchange contact information through this process. Once an agreement is made to reside together, students will be asked to verify that their housing preferences match those of a prospective roommate. Each MHP participant must indicate the other on the MHP Housing application form or otherwise notify Israel Rodriguez by Friday, June 1, 2007 via email at israel.rodriguez@nyu.edu in order to be paired together.

Students are not required to select a roommate. Individuals who do not identify a specific roommate will be assigned an MHP roommate by the NYU Housing Office.
