Direct Deposit of Stipends
General information about direct deposit
We are very pleased to announce a new service that will permit stipend payments to be directly deposited into your checking or savings account. The direct deposit option is available to all graduate students holding teaching, graduate, or research assistantships (object codes 101, 130, and 131, respectively), receiving stipend payments through the payroll system, and graduate students receiving fellowship stipend checks through the Student Information System. The application procedure is different for the two types of stipend payments and students must complete two separate application forms in order to participate in the two services. You may opt to participate in direct deposit at any time. Thus, if you are a new student who does not yet have a local bank account, you can sign up later in the semester once your finances are settled.
Procedures for direct deposit for assistantships
GSAS students who have been awarded a teaching, graduate or research assistantship may apply for direct deposit. You must have a checking or savings account at a bank that is a member of the Automatic Clearinghouse (most banks are members).
To apply for direct deposit, complete an Automatic Paycheck Direct Deposit Enrollment Form and submit it to the Payroll Department. The form is available on the WWW at the Human Resources website at http://www.nyu.edu/hr/. Go to the section labeled HR Forms and link to the form called Direct Deposit Enrollment for Paychecks.
There is typically a delay of at least one month before the direct deposit agreement becomes effective. Stipend checks will continue to be delivered to your normal check pick-up location until the direct deposit begins. Back to top
Procedures for direct deposit of fellowship stipends
GSAS students who have been awarded a fellowship may apply for direct deposit. You must have a checking or savings account at a bank that is a member of the Automatic Clearinghouse (most banks are members).
To apply for direct deposit, complete an Automatic Scholarship/Fellowship Stipend Direct Deposit Enrollment Form and submit it to the Stipend Payments Department. The form is available on the Financial Aid Office website.
There is typically a delay of at least one month before the direct deposit agreement becomes effective. Stipend checks will continue to be delivered to your normal check pick-up location (for many GSAS students this is the Office of Graduate Enrollment Services at One-half Fifth Avenue) until the direct deposit begins.
There are two important features about the fellowship direct deposit option of which you should be aware:
1. You must be a registered student in order for your fellowship stipend to be disbursed through direct deposit. If you have not registered by 10 days prior to the date of disbursement, then your award will be paid as a check that can be picked up at your normal check pick-up location (for many GSAS students this is the Office of Graduate Enrollment Services at One-half Fifth Avenue).
2. An advisory statement confirming each direct deposit will be mailed to the local address you have reported in the Registrar's Student Information System (SIS). Be sure to keep your local address updated through Albert. If you do not report a local address in SIS, the statement will be mailed to your permanent address.
