Campus Safety
New York University has the advantage of being part of an exciting metropolitan city that has much to offer students, faculty and staff. While we are an integral part of the city, NYU does maintain spaces that are exclusively for our students, including lounges and study areas. Our University has a strong sense of a student community, but we are also an important part of the vibrant Greenwich Village community in which we reside.
The NYU Protection Services Office maintains a constant presence at all of our buildings, including dormitories and classrooms. NYU also works with local authorities to make certain that our students, as well as other residents of the Greenwich Village area, are safe and protected. NYU Protection Services is available (on call) 24 hours a day, seven days a week for safety assistance and other needs. What follows are just some of the highlights of how Protection Services and Campus Transportation create a safe, secure, and comfortable environment for all NYU students:
- The NYU identification card, issued to all students, is required for entry into any of the NYU dormitories, libraries, gym, and other facilities and buildings.
- The Campus Shuttle Service provides regularly scheduled, free transportation for NYU students traveling to and from dorms, classrooms and other NYU facilities. The schedules and routes are available at the NYU Information Center at Shimkin Hall, 50 West 4th Street.
- The Campus Safety Rides/Safe Ride program is available for those traveling late at night from NYU buildings
- The Safety Escort program exists for those leaving NYU facilities during the late evenings who do not want to make the trip alone.
- Volunteer Student Protection Program at NYU (Safe Haven) has a large number of 24-hour merchants in the area posting stickers in their window, identifying them as safe havens for students to seek assistance in case of emergencies. About 100 local merchants take part in this important program-which shows the strong sense of community and cooperation that exists here at New York University and the community at large.
- NYU Protection Services works closely with the NYPD to coordinate the involvement of law enforcement officers when needed.
- NYU Protection Services issues safety alerts and conducts workshops and other educational programs to make students more aware of how to avoid being a victim of crime.
