GSG's 2011 Outstanding Faculty Award

The GSAS Graduate Student Government (GSG) is pleased to award Dr. Eero P. Simoncelli, Ph.D., Professor of Neural Science, Mathematics and Psychology, the 2011 Outstanding Faculty Award.

Each year the GSG solicits outstanding faculty nominations from graduate students across the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS). Students are asked to nominate a faculty member who inspires enthusiasm for scholarship, or has made significant contributions as an academic advisor and mentor, or has shown a sustained commitment to build a stronger sense of community at GSAS, or is simply the best professor that students have had thus far. More than 23 faculty nominations were evaluated and ranked by the GSG Executive Board.

The nomination letter submitted on Dr. Simoncelli’s behalf clearly showed that he possesses the award’s qualities in abundance.  The nominating students had these things to say about him:

"Few people can make discussions about linear algebra or probability distributions digestible, much less exciting. Somehow, Eero manages this with an alacrity and clarity that is almost magical."

"Eero is in the business of turning really daft questions posed during his lectures into brilliant, analytically insightful queries with the wave of his hand."

"Professor Simoncelli always provides the big picture to the problem, which is highly motivating."

"Eero always ensures that feedback to students, and his mentoring of them, is incredibly well tailored to the individual."

"Professor Simoncelli is extremely careful about every detail in research. He familiarizes himself with the method of experimentation and analysis the student has used, so that the research produced is of the highest quality."

Dr. Simoncelli’s achievement will be recognized at the 2011 GSAS Convocation ceremony at Avery Fisher Hall on May 18, 2011.
