Call for Applicants: GSAS Teaching and Learning Certificate
The Graduate School of Arts and Science is pleased to accept applications for the pilot year of a new certificate program in teaching and learning. Curriculum for this one-year certificate seeks to provide a foundation in pedagogy and pedagogical methods. Participants should expect to gain skills that will serve as practical tools in the classroom and that will contextualize the classroom experience to encourage reflection on the role of the teacher/scholar in the academy. Even if applicants do not expect to have a career in academic life, the ability to teach, to convey ideas and information and to engage students, is important for many other paths through life.
The new certificate program is a revised, stream-lined format that replaces the two-year certificate program previously offered by the Graduate School of Arts and Science. This is the new program’s first year, and it will be expanded next year to include a second (one-year) program for more experienced teachers. GSAS students completing work at the master’s or doctoral levels are welcome and encouraged to apply, and candidates need not have a current teaching assignment to earn the certificate. Twenty graduate students will be accepted for the inaugural cohort.
Successful completion of the certificate will include:
A. Participation in six pedagogy workshops
1. Developing Reflective Teaching Practices
2. Designing a Syllabus
3. Engaging Learning Styles
4. Assessment
5. Instructional Strategies
6. Technology, Teaching and Learning
B. Peer teaching partnership
Peer mentoring that focuses on each teacher’s individual learning goals
C. Formal summary discussion
Discussion concerning year-long progress and achievement.
Students should expect to spend approximately 25 hours during the academic year completing program requirements. Because of the pilot nature of this initial year, we ask that candidates be flexible as we develop the program.
To be considered for admission, please explain how the GSAS Teaching and Learning Certificate program fits into your professional development and goals as a scholar and teacher. Your statement should address both how this program will strengthen your work in the future and how you plan to integrate completing the certificate requirements into your current life as a graduate student scholar/teacher. Send your 1-2 page statement along with a C.V. to Assistant Dean Kathleen Talvacchia at kathleen.talvacchia@nyu.edu by November 10, 2009.
