The American Research Institute of the Southern Caucasus (ARISC)

The American Research Institute of the Southern Caucasus (ARISC) announces the availability of US graduate fellowships in support of research in the South Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia, and/or Azerbaijan). We anticipate making four to six awards of a maximum of $1500 each. Projects in all fields in the social sciences and humanities are eligible. Proposals will be judged on their quality and on the potential of the research to strengthen scholarship on the Southern Caucasus. The purpose of the fellowship is to help cover travel to and/or living expenses in the Southern Caucasus. During his/her stay in the Southern Caucasus, the fellow is expected to give an ARISC sponsored presentation on a subject related to his/her research. The fellow will acknowledge ARISC in any publication that emerges from the research carried during the fellowship.

Doctoral Student Research Award offers doctoral students an opportunity to conduct part of their dissertation research in Canada. The program is intended for students whose dissertations are related in substantial part to the study of Canada. The Canadian Government is particularly interested in projects that have policy relevance for Canada and Canada-U.S. relations. Topics that are highly relevant to Canada-U.S. relations include smart and secure borders; North American economic competitiveness; regulatory cooperation; Canada-U.S. trade and investment partnership; energy security and sustainability; environmental sustainability; emergency planning and management; Canada-U.S. security and defense cooperation; Canada in Afghanistan; global health policy; and changing demographics in North America.

Deshpande Foundation Sandbox Fellowship (New)

The Global Exchange Program puts into practice The Deshpande Foundation's vision for global exchange specific to development and innovation. The concept allows for exchange - in both directions- improving and addressing the solutions that solve the developing world's most intractable challenges. Fellows work to address challenges at NGOs working in the fields of Agriculture, Livelihood, Education and Health. Ideal candidates have experience in these areas but also add value by bringing skills from the IT sector, business (marketing and management), finance (accounting) and other globally applicable skills. The fellowship is a year-long program from June 2010-June 2011 for dynamic professionals or post-graduate school candidates who have experience working in on- the-ground development and/or social entrepreneurship and are seeking an extended experience working on these issues. Five College Fellowship Program (New)

Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst are members of the Five College consortium, which supports extensive academic and administrative collaborations among the campuses. The Five College Fellowship Program provides year-long residencies at one of the member campuses for doctoral students completing dissertations. The chief goal of the program is to promote diversity in the Academy while familiarizing Fellows with the five institutions. The program's intention is to support scholars from under-represented groups, and/or scholars with unique interests and histories, whose engagement in the Academy will enrich scholarship and teaching. Each Fellow is hosted within an appropriate department or program at Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College or Smith College. (At Smith, recipients hold a Mendenhall Fellowship.) Fellows are provided research and teaching mentors and connected through the consortial office to resources and scholars across the five campuses, which include UMass Amherst. The office also supports meetings of the Fellows throughout the year. The Fellowship includes a stipend of $30,000, a research grant, health benefits, office space, housing or housing assistance, and library privileges at all five campuses. While the award places primary emphasis on completion of the dissertation, most Fellows teach at the hosting institution, but never more than a single one-semester course. IHR Mellon Fellowships (New)

There are two types of Fellowship: Pre-dissertation and Dissertation. The Pre-dissertation Fellowship (stipend value USD $5,000) is offered for a maximum of 2 months and is intended to help candidates draw up and revise a dissertation proposal. Candidates must have completed their coursework and examinations prior to the start of the Fellowship. The Dissertation Fellowship (stipend value USD $25,000) is offered to candidates already working on their dissertation and who need to spend time in the United Kingdom to carry out archival research. These fellowships will run concurrently with the academic year (i.e. October, 1 2010 to September, 30 2011).

The Individual Advanced Research Opportunities Program (IARO) provides students, scholars and professionals with support to perform policy relevant field research, in the countries of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. In addition to engaging in research in the region, the IARO fellowship affords scholars the opportunity to increase their understanding of critical, policy relevant issues, develop and sustain international networks, and collaborate with foreign scholars on topics vital to both the academic and policy-making communities.

Jewish Studies Summer Program 2010 in Berlin Scholarships (New)

A limited number of partial and full scholarships covering transportation and tuition are available for the Leo Baeck Summer University, an English-speaking six-week summer school in Jewish Studies at the Humboldt University, Berlin. Advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students from the United States, Canada, Germany, Israel, and Eastern European countries are encouraged to apply for this unique program. As a transatlantic bridge and international meeting point for education and exchange,  the LBSU examines Jewish life in Germany before and after the Holocaust, with a particular focus on the  postwar, post-Holocaust and contemporary experience in relation both to the broader and ever more diverse German society and to other Jewish communities in Israel, the United States and worldwide. Upon successful completion of the program, students are granted 12 ECT credits. LBSU will take place from July 9 to August 20, 2010. National Solar Observatory (NSO) / Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG)

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE), and administered by the National Solar Observatory (NSO) / Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) , the main goal of the program is to expose potential researchers to an international setting at an early stage in their careers. The program will take place in Bangalore, India, under the auspices of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA). The IIA is a premier national center devoted to research in astronomy, astrophysics and related physics, with its headquarters in Bangalore and laboratories located at Kodaikanal, Kavalur, Gauribidanur, Hanle, and Hosakote. The program will support four full-time summer research positions for 8 weeks between June and August (dates to be determined each year). For each participant, the program will provide round-trip air-coach travel to and from Bangalore, India, a stipend of US $500 per week, accommodation, miscellaneous travel (field trips) and incidental expenses, and medical expenses.

A new, University-wide, doctoral training opportunity for PhD students. The program focuses on the support and development of doctoral candidates seeking careers in translational research, and is a component of the Translational Research Education and Careers (TREC) unit of New York University’s NIH-funded Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI). The program provides opportunities for training in clinical and translational research for PhD students in NYU’s CTSI Partner Schools.

Science Graduate Fellowship Program (SCGF)

The purpose of SCGF is to support outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to Department of Energy (DOE). The fellowship award provides partial tuition support ($10,500), an annual stipend for living expenses ($35,000), and a research stipend ($5,000 per year) for full-time graduate study and thesis/dissertation research for three years. DOE expects to award approximately 80 fellowships to begin in the Fall of 2010.

The “Studienstiftung des Abgeordnetenhauses von Berlin” sponsors a scholarship program that aims to promote young scholars from France, Great Britain, the United States, Russia and other successor states of the former Soviet Union. The applicants should be working on projects concerned with Berlin, Germany or German-international issues. We also welcome all other projects that require access to research facilities in Berlin. Our main target groups include the humanities and the social sciences, but we remain open to other disciplines as well.

UMSI awards help African American graduate students in biology and chemistry, conduct research and prepare their dissertation. Each fellow is required to submit an annual progress report and to present a final seminar at Merck Research Laboratories.
