As was announced last April, NYU is conducting a national (and international) search for a successor to Dick Foley as dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science. Following is some information on the search, how it works, and an invitation for feedback from the graduate student body.
A committee comprised of professors, administrators, and one undergraduate and graduate student has been formed to review candidates and make recommendations to NYU President John Sexton and Provost David McLaughlin. The search firm Isaacson, Miller, which has extensive experience in higher education searches and significant contacts in the sector, has been retained to aid in the process.
The committee is well aware that the members of the NYU community, in this case the graduate students, are also an integral resource in the process of identifying candidates. As Prof. George Downs did in July, we are again inviting people to make nominations to the search committee. Those considering making nominations should read the attached the profile to ensure that their nominees are a good fit for the position, available here: http://www.isaacsonmiller.com/Scopes/3833NYU-FAS-Dean.pdf . This description was developed by the committee. Nominees’ names can be forwarded to Jessica King of Isaacson, Miller (jking@imsearch.com) as soon as possible so that the committee will have adequate time to consider all suggestions.
Because of the delicate nature of the search, many aspects and details of the process are confidential; however, as the graduate student on the committee, I want to invite you to make comments on the issues and concerns to which you feel a new dean at NYU should be attuned. Following is a brief description of the search process and contact information.
The committee, in conjunction with Isaacson, Miller, is currently in the process of identifying candidates through nominations, outreach, advertising, and ideas from the search firm’s own files. This leads to the development of a candidate list and the review of CVs and credentials, to be followed by interviews. The final deliberation of the committee will produce a list of finalists that will be passed on to President John Sexton and Provost David McLaughlin. Final interviews with the decision makers will then be arranged and the eventual choice will be announced to the community.
Once again, nominations of particular individuals should be sent to Jessica King of Isaacson, Miller (jking@imsearch.com). Feedback can be sent to fas.deansearch@nyu.edu. As the graduate student on the committee, I am also available to receive your feedback and will make sure that it is heard by the committee.
