AWARD DESCRIPTION

GSAS SUMMER PREDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP
Fifteen awards, each $2,000, for summer 2008, are available for outstanding doctoral students who, within one year of the award, expect to complete remaining coursework and other requirements (qualifying, comprehensive and language exams). These awards are to be used for visits to research sites, such as archival resource facilities, laboratories and fieldwork locations that will be necessary for later sustained dissertation research. Applicants wishing to attend summer school programs should NOT apply for these awards. While proposals for travel within the metropolitan area will be considered, priority will be given to proposals for travel beyond this area. Each eligible department may nominate no more than two students. GSAS departments participating in the MacCracken fellowship program, as well as the Institute of Fine Arts, Cinema Studies, and Performance Studies are eligible to submit nominations.


ANDREW SAUTER FELLOWSHIP FOR PREDOCTORAL STUDENTS IN THE HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
One award of $2,500 for summer 2008 is available for an outstanding doctoral student who, within one year of the award, expects to complete remaining coursework and other requirements (qualifying, comprehensive and language exams). The award supports the research and study abroad of graduate students in the humanities and social sciences and may be used for visits to research sites, such as archival resource facilities, libraries, laboratories and fieldwork locations that will be necessary for later sustained dissertation research. Applicants wishing to attend summer school programs should NOT apply for this award. The award may be used for travel, housing, and expenses, depending on student need and program requirements. Each department in which eligible work is being conducted may nominate one student. Students nominated but not selected for the Sauter Fellowship will automatically be considered for the GSAS Summer Predoctoral Fellowship, which is in the amount of $2,000.


DORIS M. OHLSEN TRAVEL/RESEARCH AWARDS FOR LATIN AMERICAN, CARIBBEAN, AND SPANISH SCHOLARSHIP
One award of $2,500 for summer 2008 is available for outstanding graduate students to support study and research in Latin America, the Caribbean, and /or Spain. Doctoral student applicants should, within one year of the award, expect to complete remaining coursework and other requirements (qualifying, comprehensive and language exams). Exceptional Master’s students, proposing research contributing to their theses, are eligible to apply for departmental nomination. The awards support the research and study abroad of scholars in the humanities and social sciences and may be used for visits to research sites, such as archival resource facilities, libraries, and fieldwork locations that will be necessary for later sustained dissertation research. Award funds may also be used for travel, housing, and expenses, depending on student needs and program requirements. Each department in which eligible work is being conducted may nominate one student. Students nominated but not selected for the Doris M. Ohlsen Award will automatically be considered for the GSAS Summer Predoctoral Fellowship, which is in the amount of $2,000.


MAINZER SUMMER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Four awards, each $6,000, for summer 2008, are available for outstanding doctoral students to support study in the areas of love and sexuality, gender studies, or the psychology of love and sexuality. Although there is a preference for a focus on German traditions in these fields in German literature and in the broader German culture, the award is not limited to graduate students in the German Department nor is it limited to those studying German literature or culture.Doctoral student applicants should, within one year of the award, expect to complete remaining coursework and other requirements (qualifying, comprehensive and language exams). The awards may be used for research and travel. Each department in which eligible work is being conducted may nominate one student. Students nominated but not selected for the Mainzer Summer Fellowship program will automatically be considered for the GSAS Summer Predoctoral Fellowship, which is in the amount of $2,000.


PATRICIA DUNN LEHRMAN FELLOWSHIP
One award of $3,000 for 2008-2009 academic year is available for an outstanding doctoral student who is working towards a dissertation in the field of arts in American society. The student can still be taking courses or working on a dissertation but must have been enrolled in the department for at least one year by the time of application. Each department in which eligible work is being conducted may nominate one student.


ROBERT HOLMES TRAVEL/RESEARCH AWARD FOR AFRICAN SCHOLARSHIP
Two awards, each $2,500, for 2008-2009 academic year are available for outstanding graduate students are available to support study and research in Africa. Doctoral student applicants should, within one year of the award, expect to complete remaining coursework and other requirements (qualifying, comprehensive and language exams). Exceptional Master’s students, proposing research contributing to their theses, are eligible to apply for departmental nomination. The awards support the research and study abroad of scholars in the humanities and social sciences and may be used for visits to research sites, such as archival resource facilities, libraries, and fieldwork locations that will be necessary for later sustained dissertation research. Award recipients are expected to make a presentation of the research as part of the Africa House programming, if possible in Spring 2009. Students nominated but not selected for the Holmes Award will automatically be considered for the GSAS Summer Predoctoral Fellowship, which is in the amount of $2,000.


HORIZON FELLOWSHIP IN THE NATURAL AND PHYSI AL SCIENCES
Applications are accepted from students in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
One award, up to $4,000 for 2008-2009, is available for an outstanding doctoral student who, within one year of the award, expects to complete remaining coursework and other requirements (qualifying, comprehensive and language exams). The award supports the research and study or travel to present invited papers of graduate students in the natural and physical sciences, and may be used for travel, housing, and expenses, depending on student need and program requirements. Each eligible department may nominate one student. Students who are whose applications proposed research and not conference presentations and were nominated but not selected for the Horizon Fellowship will automatically be considered for the GSAS Summer Predoctoral Fellowship, which is in the amount of $2,000.


MARGARET AND HERMAN SOKOL TRAVEL/RESEARCH AWARDS FOR PREDOCTORAL STUDENTS IN THE SCIENCES
Applications are accepted from students in the Departments of Anthropology (physical program), Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology (experimental and cognitive programs), and the Center for Neural Science.
Award(s), up to $4,000 each for summer 2008 (up to 3 months), are available for advanced graduate students who have qualified as Ph.D. candidates in their departments. The award supports the research and study abroad, or travel abroad to present invited papers, of graduate students in the sciences. The award may be used for summer travel, housing, and expenses, depending on student need and program requirements. Each eligible department may nominate one student. Proposals will be reviewed by the GSAS Honors and Awards Committee based on the following: scientific quality of proposal, including rationale for proposed travel; candidate's qualifications and potential for professional growth; in the case of sustained research, suitability of host laboratory or department. Students whose applications proposed research and not conference presentations and who were nominated but not selected for the Sokol Predoctoral Fellowship will automatically be considered for the GSAS Summer Predoctoral Fellowship, which is in the amount of $2,000.


MARGARET AND HERMAN SOKOL POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP
One award of $10,000 for the 2008-2009 academic year is available for an outstanding NYU doctoral degree recipient in the sciences who will perform a year of postdoctoral research. The postdoctoral position may be held at any institution, including NYU. The recipient of this award will be acknowledged at the Wednesday, May 14, 2008 GSAS Convocation ceremony. Ph.D. must have been awarded in May 2007, September 2007, or January 2008. Each eligible department may nominate one student.


DEAN’S OUTSTANDING DISSERTATION PRIZES
Prizes valued at $1,000 to recognize the best doctoral dissertations in the Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences; one award is typically given in each division. The recipients of this award will be acknowledged at the Wednesday, May 14, 2008 GSAS Convocation ceremony. Ph.D. must have been awarded in May 2007, September 2007, or January 2008. Each department may nominate one student.


DEAN’S OUTSTANDING GRADUATE STUDENT TEACHING AWARDS
Prizes valued at $1,000 to recognize outstanding teaching by graduate students in the Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences; one award is typically given in each division. The recipients of this award will be acknowledged at the Wednesday, May 14, 2008 GSAS Convocation ceremony. Recipients may also be invited to serve as Graduate Teaching Fellows in the 2008-2009 Graduate Student Educational Development Program (GSEDP). Each department may nominate one student.
