A Note About Friday TA Orientation Follow-Up Sessions:

The three Friday programs are intended to supplement the August 28th New TA Orientation sponsored by the Graduate Student Educational Development Program for graduate students with new teaching appointments. Led by experienced Graduate Teaching Fellows, the goal of this discussion series is to address classroom concerns as they occur during the semester. Registration is open to all graduate students, regardless of their participation in the August orientation.

 

More Effective Use of Writing in the NYU Classroom
Wednesday, September 26, 2007. 12:30-2:00 pm.
Presented by Bruce Bromley, Faculty, Expository Writing Program

Simone Weil calls imagination "la source des actions": and this workshop, by investigating how reading and writing are reciprocally related, will focus on the inferential skills vital to student work, regardless of discipline. Involving us in multiple media, our labors will exhibit that imaginative actions invigorate the connectivity between teaching and learning.

You Survived the First Month, Now What?

This is a Friday TA Orientation Follow-Up Session.

You've met your students and collected the first assignments. Are most students merely summarizing the course readings? Are both you and your students disappointed with their first grades? Has that talkative student on the first day of class become disruptive? Are you unsure whether your quiet students are really "getting it?" This session will address these early semester challenges.

Statement on Teaching and Learning Workshop
Wednesday, October 3, 2007. 12:30-2:00 pm.

A Statement on Teaching and Learning is a key component of one's teaching portfolio. This workshop will provide concrete advice and practical exercises to help draft and perfect a teaching statement that is personal, concise and informative.

Note: Participants are required to submit copies of their teaching statement by noon, September 19th, and to read those submitted by other participants before the workshop date. Instructions for submitting and reading will be sent after registration.

Developing the Promising Syllabus Workshop
Wednesday, October 17, 2007. 12:30-2:00 pm.
Presented by David Slocum, Director, Center for Teaching Excellence.

How can the structure of a syllabus influence how students learn? This workshop helps participants with draft syllabi in hand to consider the values guiding their work. The objective is to create more integrated syllabi that stimulate student learning throughout a given course.

(It is helpful but not required for registrants to have taken the introductory "Promising Syllabus" workshop.)

Maintaining Mid-Semester Momentum

How do you prevent your classes from becoming predictable and routine? How do you prepare your students and yourself for mid-term examinations and evaluations? How do you get students to show up, both to class and to office hours? These are the questions we will explore to create a mid-semester success instead of a mid-semester slump.

Evaluating Your Students and Yourself
Wednesday, November 14, 2007. 12:30-2:00 pm.
Presented by Tey Meadow, CTE Grad Student Consultant

How can we use assignments and grades to help improve the quality of our teaching? How can we evaluate ourselves as teachers to maximize student learning? In this session, we will discuss how we can create assignments worth grading, establish clear criteria and standards for grading, and communicate better with students about their work. We will also provide strategies to evaluate what you do.

The end of your first semester is in sight, but both you and your students are feeling stressed out and tired. How can you prepare them to succeed on those assignments? How can you manage their anxiety? And finally, how can you use your experiences this past semester to build successful classroom encounters in the future?
