These are specific instructions for questions on Page 1 of the GSAS application.

Printing a Copy of Page 1

When you have completed Page 1 of the online application, click the "Preview" button in the upper right-hand corner of the page and print or save a copy of the PDF for your records.

U.S. Social Security Number

If you have a U.S. social security number, provide it. Otherwise, leave this item blank. Do not report Canadian social security numbers or passport numbers.

Other Names that may appear on your records or credentials

If you previously applied to the Graduate School under a different name, or your academic credentials (e.g., school transcripts, test score reports, or any other supporting materials) show a different name, please report it. Please report any differences from your current name—for example, if the hyphenation is different, if you had a maiden name, if there is an alternative spelling of your name.

Check your GRE and/or TOEFL score reports. If the name on your score reports differs in any way from the name you entered in the "Personal Information" section, be sure to include it here.

Filing Status

If you wish to change your Department, Field of Study, or Degree Objective, click the "Update my answers" link at the upper right-hand corner of the page.

Click the "Choose Term" link to select from the allowable terms to begin enrollment for your program.

Permanent and Mailing Addresses

Your permanent address is required. We will use this for all mailed correspondence unless you provide an alternative mailing address. If you provide a different mailing address, you must indicate the period of time for which it is to be used.

If you need to reset your answer to the "used always / used until" question, click the "Reset Radio Buttons" link at the bottom of the page.

Other Information--E-mail Addresses

The primary e-mail address you provide on the application is the e-mail address the Graduate School will use to communicate important information during the application process. Alternate e-mail addresses will be used if we cannot contact you via your primary e-mail address. When sending e-mail to the Graduate School, you should write to us from your primary e-mail address. If you give us permission to provide you with information on the status of your application by email, we will send your application acknowledgement letter to you via e-mail; otherwise, it will be sent to you by regular mail.

A Note on Spam Filters--During the application process, you will be receiving e-mail messages from Embark, and potentially from New York University as well. To make sure that important e-mail messages about your application can reach you, you should do one or more of the following:

  • Adjust your spam filters to ignore messages from the "embark.com" and "nyu.edu" domains. Check adjusting spam filters in GMail and adjusting spam filters in Outlook for examples.

  • Create an e-mail filter that looks for mail from the "embark.com" and "nyu.edu" domains and moves it to a dedicated folder. Check creating filters in Yahoo mail for an example.

  • Routinely check your spam folder for any mail from the "embark.com" and "nyu.edu" domains that may have ended up there.

Other Information--Ethnicity and Race

Declaring your ethnicity and race is optional. The Graduate School provides statistical information about enrollment patterns to the University and to selected outside organizations in developing research on how better to serve underrepresented populations. The questions, format, and definitions used are specified by the U.S. government. Although providing your ethnicity and race is optional, it is important information and we appreciate your willingness to indicate it where requested.

NYU Affiliation

If this section is displayed at the bottom of the page, it is because you answered "Yes" to any of the following questions on the "Preliminary Questions" page:

3) Have you ever applied to any school or college at NYU?
4) Has anyone in your family graduated from the Graduate School of Arts and Science?
5) Has anyone in your family graduated from another school or college at NYU?

If this section is not displayed, it is because you answered "No" to all three questions, or did not provide an answer. To change the answer to any of these questions, click the "Update my answers" link at the upper right-hand corner of the page, change the answer to question 3, 4, and/or 5, then click "Save and Continue."

Citizenship / Immigration or Visa Status

U.S. Citizens--You will not see this section displayed. If you are not a U.S. citizen, but do not see this section at the bottom of the page, click the "Update my answers" link at the upper right-hand corner of the page, change your answer to question 2 ("Are you a U.S. Citizen?"), then click "Save and Continue."

Non-U.S. Citizens--You will see this section displayed at the bottom of the page. If you are a U.S. citizen, but this section is displayed, click the "Update my answers" link at the upper right-hand corner of the page, change your answer to question 2 ("Are you a U.S. Citizen?"), then click "Save and Continue."

If you are not a U.S. citizen, please answer both the "Country of Citizenship" and "Country of Birth" questions, then answer the "are you a Permanent Resident" question.

If you are not a U.S. citizen and not a Permanent Resident, please answer the final 2 questions ("are you living within the U.S." and "visa sought") at the the bottom of the page.
