1. Application Overview

A look at the questions you will be asked as part of the application process, and the supporting materials you will need to provide, can be found on the GSAS Application Guide. Please also refer to the GSAS Application Policies page.

2. Application Deadlines

Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Eastern (New York City) time on the deadline dates listed in Application Requirements and Deadlines for Departments and Programs. This includes all supporting materials. If an application deadline date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal U.S. holiday, then the next business day will be the deadline date.

Please allow sufficient time for official test scores to arrive at the Graduate School--schedule your test dates accordingly. Please refer to the Test Scores section below for more details.

Financial Aid Deadline. An application must be submitted by the deadline date to be eligible for Graduate School and departmental fellowships and other awards. No other forms are required for consideration.

3. Application Fees

The application fee is nonrefundable.

4. Test Scores

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

Answers to many questions about the GRE and TOEFL can be found in the GRE and TOEFL FAQ.

The Graduate School requires that all applicants (except those noted below) submit official score reports of the general test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Some programs require a subject test of the GRE as well. Refer to Application Requirements and Deadlines for Departments and Programs for any additional testing requirements.

The Graduate School will not waive the GRE requirement based on life experience, educational background, country of residence, or other factors.

Applicants must arrange for the GRE program to send official test score reports to GSAS. When requesting official score reports, make sure they are sent to New York University--GSAS, institution code 2596. You do not need to use a department code for the GRE.

It is important that you arrange to take the GRE and have official scores sent to GSAS no later than four to six weeks before the deadline date. For example, if your program's deadline is December 18, you should take the GRE no later than November 1 so that the results are available for consideration by mid-December. Submitting scores after this time may delay consideration of your application. Applicants may upload a copy of their GRE score report as part of their application, but official score reports are still required.

Please note that the GRE program will not send official score reports for tests taken more than five years previously. If you took the test more than five years ago, you must retake the test. Please refer to specific dates in the FAQ.

GRE Requirement Exceptions--A small number of programs have exceptions to the general GRE requirement. Refer to Application Requirements and Deadlines for Departments and Programs.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Answers to many questions about the GRE and TOEFL can be found in the GRE and TOEFL FAQ.

The Graduate School expects all students to demonstrate the ability to understand and communicate in English, both orally and in written form. To evaluate proficiency, the Graduate School requires applicants whose native language is not English to submit official score reports of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The Graduate School recommends that the applicant achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 100 on the internet-based test (600 on the paper-based test). The Graduate School does not prohibit applicants with lower scores from applying for admission since many factors influence the admission decision. Some programs in the Graduate School may set a higher TOEFL standard for admission.

The TOEFL requirement is waived for applicants who have completed or will complete a baccalaureate or master's degree at an institution where the language of instruction is English.

Applicants must arrange for the TOEFL program to send official test score reports to GSAS. When requesting official score reports, make sure they are sent to New York University--GSAS, institution code 2596. You must also use a department code. Any department code other than 00 will work. If in doubt, use code 99. Do not use code 00--the Graduate School will not receive your scores.

It is important that you arrange to take the TOEFL and have official scores sent to GSAS no later than six to eight weeks before the deadline date. For example, if your program's deadline is December 18, you should take the TOEFL no later than October 15 so that the results are available for consideration by mid-December. Submitting scores after this time may delay consideration of your application. Applicants may upload a copy of their TOEFL score report as part of their application, but official score reports are still required.

Please note that the TOEFL program will not send official score reports for tests taken more than two years previously. If you took the test more than two years ago, you must retake the test. Please refer to specific dates in the FAQ.

The Graduate School does not accept International English Language Test System (IELTS) scores in lieu of TOEFL scores.

5. Transcripts

Answers to many questions about our policies and procedures for academic transcripts can be found in the Academic Transcripts FAQ.

When you apply online, one (1) official academic transcript, mark sheet, or final grades sheet (and English translation, if required) from each institution you attended should be uploaded on one of the “Transcript Upload” pages as part of your online application. If uploaded, you should NOT send official copies of your transcripts to Graduate Enrollment Services at this time. If you are offered admission, you will be requested to provide an official copy. The baccalaureate or equivalent transcript should clearly indicate conferral of your undergraduate degree. If you are currently completing your baccalaureate, you should upload a transcript showing your academic record through your most current year of study. See GSAS Application Page 2 Instructions for more information.

If you are not able to upload a transcript in the online application for an unusual technical reason, then you must send a copy to the Graduate School (see mailing instructions below).

6. Submitting the Application

Most if not all of your application should be submitted online, except for those materials that cannot be included (CDs/DVDs, bound printed material, etc.). Test scores are submitted electronically to the Graduate School by the GRE and TOEFL programs. If you must send supporting materials to the Graduate School, please follow these guidelines:

  • Do not mail the Graduate School a duplicate paper copy of your online application.
  • When possible, all materials should be submitted as part of one package to speed processing.
  • Use your personalized Document Cover Sheet from your online application, found in Step 4: Supplemental Forms.
  • Write the program name and degree for which you are applying on the outside of the mailing envelope.
  • The Graduate School does not accept applications or supporting materials sent by fax or email.
  • All application materials must be received by the deadline date.
